Web usage on mobiles is bigger than ever before

A BBC news article has today highlighted the huge growth of the mobile web.

Better network speeds and improved handset usability are now finally bringing the kind of web experience that’s been promised for many years.

From the report:

Mobile internet use is growing while the number of people going online via a PC is slowing, analyst firm Nielsen Online has found.

Some 7.3m people accessed the net via their mobile phones, during the second and third quarters of 2008.

While Google remains the most popular site for those logging on via the desktop, on mobile internet BBC News is the most visited site, with nearly a quarter of mobile internet consumers using it.

This is especially interesting as it demonstrates there’s a strong demand for interesting content on mobile - rather than simply using the handset to search the web. Searching, for example: for restaurants nearby.

With mobile use outgrowing traditional desktop PC use, a mobile web component has to be considered a vital part of any digital marketing campaign.
