Prioritising email design for the crowded inbox

You’d have to be a pretty lucky computer user to not have a problem with spam. Most of us get huge amounts of unsolicited email each day and we’re forced to scan our inboxes and delete unimportant messages - usually as quickly as possible under pressure.

On the other hand, email is one of a website’s most powerful tools for improving confidence and trust in both the site and the company. If you’re communicating with your customers via email, you need to make sure your messages get through and aren’t instantly deleted by your customers as spam.

Jakob Nielsen is one of the world’s most respected web experts and he’s written a great article on improving email usability. Definitely worth reading if you’re involved in writing email content.
